Shoal at Six Mile Reef and Plum Gut

In this view looking north, the Sound's cragged bottom reaches to eastward and opens into the Atlantic at Montauk Point.  The shoal of Six Mile Reef rises toward the surface (upper left).  Plum Gut, a 190-foot-deep trench and often a dangerous passage for small craft, slices between Orient Point and Plum Island (center).  The Race, at 330 feet the deepest hole in the Sound, cuts just below Fishers Island (upper right).  The home base of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet lies in the deep and straight channel of the Thames River (top right).
